The success of a healthcare sector mainly depends on the leadership of health professionals who are in authority; this can be a nurse executive who controls various units or a nurse manager in control of a unit (Vaismoradi et al., 2016). To successfully lead others, nurse leaders need to have the necessary leadership skills and qualities that will be used to solve all the challenges. Effective leadership skills are instrumental in the decision-making process in nursing. Nurse leaders need to be visionary, communicative, charismatic, have a team-first attitude, and have appropriate strategies for success. These qualities are necessary for implementing the proposed change.
In order to implement clinical practise guidelines for prescribing benzodiazepines in UMass Memorial Hospital, I would embrace a transformational leadership style to spearhead the change. As a transformational leader, I would inspire my staff through effective communication and collaboration to initiate a path for success in implementing the change. I would seek the opinions of the subordinate nurses in their decision to embrace the change. As the leader, I would establish an environment where nurses will feel free to ask for assistance from colleagues or leaders in case they need any assistance. A conducive environment allows nurses to work efficiently and behave well due to individual consideration, inspiration, motivation, and intellectual stimulation (Poghosyan & Bernhardt, 2018).
The transformational leadership style I will embrace strongly connects with how I disseminate results. It will facilitate the transfer of tacit and explicit knowledge among nurses and other health providers. Tacit knowledge will generate sustainable competitive results and improvements in organizational performance.
Considering my current leadership style, I have intellectual stimulation, inspiration, charisma, effective communication skills, and individualized consideration of employees. However, I need to strengthen my ability to tolerate risk because there is no ordinary path leading through a disruptive change. I would need the support of stakeholders in the organization, including nurses, other healthcare professionals, and the management, to implement the change. The transformational leadership style applies in implementing clinical practice guidelines for prescribing benzodiazepines in UMass Memorial Hospital by setting clear goals and high expectations and encouraging the healthcare providers to embrace the change.
